VISION COMPETITION FOR KONGELUNDEN AARHUS
Kongelunden Aarhus is comprised of a number of different areas in the large green area stretching from Marselisborg and the Botanical Garden to the south to Tivoli Friheden to the north – and from the Observatory to the west to the bay to the east.
The goal of the vision competition is to gather ideas that can help usher Aarhus and Kongelunden Aarhus into a new era. We want ground-breaking ideas that are compellingly communicated, visualized and substantiated with arguments in the form of data and strategy. As reflected in the form and submission requirements of the competition, participants will be rewarded for investing knowledge and time in the development of their ideas and their argumentation – not for the level of detail of their architectural drawings. The total prize amount is approx. DKK 700,000.
The purpose of the vision competition is to contribute to the development of the overall vision for Kongelunden Aarhus. ‘Vision Kongelunden’ sets out five guiding principles. The purpose of the vision competition is to facilitate the development and visualization of these guiding principles in a way that contributes to the realization of the full potential of the entire Kongelunden Aarhus area. The participants in the vision competition may choose to focus in depth on a single guiding principle, or to synthesize them in a single overarching concept for the development of Kongelunden Aarhus, including the physical and/or mental connections between Kongelunden Aarhus and surrounding areas.
We hope that the competition will attract the best Danish and international companies, and that they will be inspired to present a compelling vision for how Kongelunden can make a radical difference for Aarhus.
THE VISION FOR KONGELUNDEN AARHUS
Five strategic guiding principles will steer the development of Kongelunden Aarhus, as described in the vision approved by the Aarhus City Council in March 2020:
More destinations will make Kongelunden Aarhus a unified attraction in Aarhus and Eastern Jutland. This will be achieved by removing physical barriers and by developing new and updating existing destinations, with reference to green and blue nature and the unique historical and landscape conditions in the area.
Kongelunden Aarhus will be a centre for quality of life, movement and large and small communities. This will be achieved by ensuring that there are a variety of different functions that support one another and encourage visitors to move around in the area instead of only visiting individual, isolated attractions.
Kongelunden Aarhus will be a modern venue for events within sports, culture and business. Extensive modernization and new construction of sports facilities with a focus on flexible and high utilization will create a new centre for both large and small events in eastern Jutland.
Kongelunden Aarhus will be a space for peace, reflection, contemplation and knowledge. This will be achieved by dedicating part of the area to life’s quieter recreative pursuits and by making room for functions that foster curiosity and science.
As a whole, Vision Kongelunden will activate and democratize the entire area, which will make it into ‘the playground for all of Aarhus’. The area will be transformed from offering a single excursion destination to becoming a part of the everyday lives of the citizens of Aarhus.
In order to realize the vision, three interventions are necessary:
First, by developing, upgrading and wholistically re-thinking existing and new excursion destinations, many more reasons for citizens to visit more parts of the area more often must be created.
Second, by modernizing and constructing central sports facilities, synergies and connections must be created that lay the groundwork for commercial operations, with a focus not on sports alone, but also on large and small events, in order to meet the needs of citizens, associations and business. The catalyst for this transformation will be the construction of a new football stadium.
Finally, an ambitious and total reconceptualization of the area’s infrastructure will future-proof service for the area, with a focus on mobility, movement, functionality and aesthetics.

Who can participate?
The vision competition is aimed at architects, landscape architects, urban and project developers, and other professionals who work with forms of development relevant to the vision competition. We encourage participants to work in teams, engaging in collaborative partnerships with specialists in relevant fields, for example experience design, film, sports and events, outdoor recreation, destination and tourism development, community, mobility and the development of modern sports facilities. Our ambition is not for participants to work in extremely large teams, or for all teams to possess all of the specialisations named above. Rather, each team should be composed on the background of its strategy for its participation.
Express your interest in participating in the vision competition
Out of consideration for the secretariat's further planning of the process of exhibition and assessment, prospective participants are required to submit a formal expression of interest in participating in the vision competition in advance. To do so, prospective participants should send an email to The Kongelunden Secretariat at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include the subject line ‘Expression of interest’.
The mail must contain information about who will be participating in the vision competition (name(s), company/ies, organization(s) or experts) as well as contact information for the contact person (name, phone number and email).
The expression of interest must be received by the Kongelunden Secretariat no later than August 21 2020. You will receive a confirmation email from the Kongelunden Secretariat that your request to participate has been accepted.
Entries from participants who do not submit an expression of interest on time and who have not received written confirmation of their participation will not be considered.
Submission requirements and terms and conditions
The entries submitted to the vision competition must make a positive contribution the story of Kongelunden Aarhus and its development. In connection with the competition program, additional information will be provided about submission requirements. In order to give potential participating teams an understanding of the requirements for entries, an outline of the submission requirements is provided here.
The entry must contain a description of the submitter’s proposal that contains a ground-breaking concept for the development of Kongelunden. Generally speaking, the entry should focus on the development of the concept as communicated through words, data and images. We are not interested in precise, detailed architectural drawings. Participants will be asked to submit
- One poster with one general layout plan for the entire Kongelunden Aarhus area and adjacent areas. The precise scale to be used on the poster will be announced in connection with the competition program, and will be at an overall, conceptual level. The layout plan must conceptually illustrate which elements would contribute most to realizing the vision, for example structures, special activities, landscape elements or other elements. The layout plan must also communicate overall connections at the conceptual level, for example the architectural, social and infrastructural connections, between Kongelunden Aarhus and the surrounding areas. We do not expect the entry to provide a comprehensive plan for the entire development. We will place an emphasis on strong concepts for individual sub-elements. Submitting detailed plans for parts of the Kongelunden area will count against the entry. The poster must also include two professionally rendered large-format visualizations that illustrate the concept. The map and images may be accompanied by supplementary diagrams and short texts elaborating on the concept. Support for the concept may be provided in the form of experience data, knowledge of urban development trends, specific analyses, business models, strategic considerations or good references/experiences from other cities and projects.
- The poster may, if desired, be accompanied by one of the following supplementary materials:
- A video, max. 5 minutes
- A model or 3D representation, max. 1x1x1 meter
- A text in the form of an essay, a strategy, analysis, data or the like, max. 8 A4 pages, including any illustrations
Note that participation in the vision competition process does not entail a commitment to financial support for project development.
Likewise, participation in the vision competition is not an obstacle to participation in subsequent tender calls related to ‘Vision Kongelunden’, just as participation in the vision competition does not qualify participants for participation in the further process.
The final entries must be received by the Kongelunden Secretariat no later than October 30 2020 at noon.
Other ways to contribute ideas to the development of the project
The vision competition is just one of many ways to contribute to the development of Kongelunden.
Anyone with an idea or an interest in influencing the development of the area can take part. We will organise public meetings, development meetings, Kongelund walks and events in Kongelunden leading up to November 2020.
THE COMPETITION PROCESS
June 8 2020: Digital public meeting – an introduction to ‘Vision Kongelunden’ with the project’s political steering committee
June 26 2020: The announcement of the Vision Competition
August 21 2020: Deadline for expressions of interest for participation in the vision competition
September-October 2020: Opportunity (voluntary) to participate in walks in Kongelunden Aarhus (to be announced on the project website)
Early September 2020: A concise competition program will be sent to the participants. The program will contain a more detailed explanation of the contents of this announcement, a map of Kongelunden, conditions and a list of the ideas that have been generated by citizens and others and submitted to the secretariat
30 October 2020: Deadline for submission of entries to the vision competition
November 2020: All entries will be exhibited in connected with an event and public meeting
November - December 2020: Judging of entries
Early 2021: Publication and presentation of selected entries at a conference
The selected ideas from the vision competition will be incorporated into the subsequent project development process. How this takes place in practice will depend on their character. The general layout plans for the area will provide inspiration for both project development in regard to the sports facilities and for the development of the master plan and further development of the entire Kongelunden Aarhus area.
In parallel to the vision competition, a feasibility study will be conducted that will map out the prerequisites for the development of the area’s infrastructure, the project’s operating model, etc. In addition, various dialogue activities will be held with the area’s neighbors, users, and other stakeholders.
A number of tender calls and competitions in relation to Kongelunden will be carried out: The vision competition is the first competition. The subsequent competitions will be formal tender calls and project competitions that will involve prequalification and associated requirements and obligations.
In September, more detailed information about the project’s schedule and tendering strategy will be made available,
after which a master plan, a municipal development plan and a local development plan will be drawn up, followed by construction work.
Judging and awards
The submitted entries will be evaluated by a judging committee consisting of project representatives and expert advisers and/or specialist judges. The composition of the judging committee will be announced in connection with the publication of the competition program in early September 2020.
The judging committee will select the entries which make the strongest and most compelling contribution to making Kongelunden a project that benefits Aarhus as a whole and which will contribute to future-proofing the area for coming generations. Entries that present compelling representations of ground-breaking concepts for the development of Kongelunden that are supported by well-founded, analytical and preferably data-based arguments will be evaluated positively. The inclusion of extremely detailed architectural drawings will count against the entry. The judging criteria will be described in greater detail in the competition program.
The total prize sum at the disposal of the judging committee is DKK 680,000. The expectation is that two first prizes accompanied by a cash award of DKK 340,000 will presented, or alternatively three first prizes of DKK 225,000.
The judging committee/the City of Aarhus reserves the right to reject all entries.
The expectation is that the winning entries will be announced in early 2021. All participants who submit entries will receive a confirmation of receipt, and will be informed of the results of the vision competition.

Further tender calls and competitions
A number of tender calls and competitions in relation to Kongelunden will be carried out: The vision competition is the first competition. The subsequent competitions will be formal tender calls and project competitions that will involve prequalification and associated requirements and obligations. In September, more detailed information about the project’s schedule and tendering strategy will be made available.
In parallel to the vision competition, various dialogue activities will be held with the area’s neighbors, users, and other stakeholders. These activities will be announced on the project website. We have already received a variety of good proposals and ideas from citizens and other stakeholders. It is extremely positive that so many actors are interested in making a positive contribution to the development of the area, and we would like to see these ideas taken up and incorporated into the entries submitted to the Vision Competition. The Kongelunden Secretariat is in the process of developing an ideas bank that will be made available to all on the project website, including the participants in the Vision Competition.
