Urkraften

Jean René Gaugain (1936)

Indhold

In the beautiful Column Hall of the Stadionhallerne at the end of Stadion Allé stands the sculpture Urkraften.

The sculpture is also known as The Boxer or The Fist Fighter.

The statue was created by the Danish-French sculptor Jean René Gauguin, who won a bronze medal with it at the 1924 Olympics. Jean René was the son of the painter Paul Gauguin, who was briefly married to a Danish woman.

The sculpture in the Column Hall is made of plaster and cement. The original bronze version is located at the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK).

Jean René Gauguin is also the artist behind Football Players, which is installed at John Stampes Plads in front of the Stadionhallerne.

Gauguin had a deep interest in depicting movement — both of humans and animals. This is evident in his works.
